I think it would be a lot more to build a 383 compared to a 396. At least were I'm at, there are the '66-'67 396 blocks everywhere and they all have steel cranks. ideally, people should dyno an engine well past peak hp, so they can check average hp in different ranges. pick the best range, and go with that. if the average is better from 7800-9300 vs. 7200-8700, you will go with stall speed at 7800 and shift at 9300. a range of about 1200 rpm is minimum, maybe 1500rpm wide at the max.That's pretty much what we see with the 383 vs. 406 units. Our pump-gas 383's average approximately 475 HP and our 400's come in around 575. The problem basically with the 400's is coming up with cores. Many of our customers opt for the aftermarket blocks on the 400's. These blocks are also worth some add'l HP. Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S.

The 383 is meant to be a higher compression engine, using either the 5.7" or 6.0" rods. 400 uses a 5.5" rod. The less oversquare you have in an engine, the more torque that's produced. (Oversquare is bore vs. stroker, for instance 4.030 x 3.750 (383) vs 4.125 x 3.750 (400) vs 4.000 x 4.380 (350), etc) 400 heads also have steam holes in between ...

Can buy a standard bore 400" two bolt block for $250 or a late model 350" roller four bolt block for $200. One thing you might want to consider, go with a 406. This uses the long stroke(3.75"), but big bore! It is a killer! :D You can stay with the tpi, and make more torque and hp than the 383. The 383 does have a ton of tq, and doesn't need to rev to hit good HP numbers. I believe that since you don't plan on driving this a lot, that you should consider the 454. More money without question, but you get what you pay for. The difference between the two is very noticable, the 454 will always have more low end.
