This can happen for several reasons, but the most common cause is there is low transmission fluid level. It's under a black cover held in by 3 bolts, the part itself is only held in by 2. When you go to install the new one, line up the the bolt holes by looking at the dirt outline, you need to get it lined up right or it wont work right. Here is a pic for reference.
