Johnson outboard timing adjustment.

Oct 23, 2012 · I have a 1997 johnson 150 hp outboard with a timing problem. I was told I could time it out of the water by taking all the plugs out and grounding the water temp. sensors, hook a timing light to No. 1 cyl.,switch on and crank the motor. I have the timing adjustment retarded as far as it will go. with the throttle wide open ,it shows 30 degrees ... #1. I am working on a 1995 50 HP 3 cylinder Johnson outboard. Initially the motor was not firing on the 3rd cylinder. The motor would get up on step and drop rpm and then it would kick in again. Very sporatic. There is good compression in all 3 cylinders. All 3 ignition coils are working. I changed out the timer base. The pointer is called a timing fixture but it is really a tool to adjust the ignition to fire as close as possible to 180 degrees apart. Any kind of a tool would work as long as it was straight and fasten to the crankshaft If you set one set of points you could put the pointer between the marks. 2,765. Apr 14, 2011. #2. Zoom in til you see the linkages well, and you will see reference numbers 80, 86, and 81.To fix this problem, adjust the shift linkage so that it lines up with the neutral position on the transmission. 2. Loose shift cable. If the shift cable is loose or has too much slack, this can cause problems with shifting gears. To fix this problem, adjust the cable tension so that there is no slack in the cable.

Along with changing the water pump and impeller on a regular basis, sometimes the timing on the motor needs to be adjusted too. The timing is set by adjusting the link rods inside the engine. Setting the timing on the Johnson outboard should take around an hour.

May 8, 2021 · Hi. I have a 1985 Johnson 100 hp commercial outboard. The model number is J100WMLCOC. I cannot find the wot timing spec anywhere. I have looked many times on the net and here with no luck. What I am seeing is cranking at wot with the timer base rubber stop hitting it's stop is 21 degrees.
