You have to wait for the berries to rot and then it still takes some time before they turn into compost. I always throw my poisonous berries and mushrooms into the composter and they eventually disappear. I compost them, but only after I’m satisfied with my cooking level. Until then, I put them in bowls for salad xp, then empty the bowl. It takes quite a bit of time for the rotten food to turn into compost -- 3 or 4 weeks, if I remember right. You'll also need a sack to be able to "harvest" the compost from the composter. You will get a visual indicator when there's compost to be collected (looks like the bin is filled with dirt). When you right click on the compost bin it will say how much compost there is available, and you have to have a sack to collect it.
