I have a 39A that with a SN that starts 69. When I look up the serial number in the following link it skips 69. Any idea what that is about? MARLIN Manufacturing DATE CODE Also, I bought the scope separate from the gun. I tried to get a scope that was the same era as the gun. Anyone know how to date a scope?

Jul 8, 2011 · Boot1978; The Micro-Groove barrels did not show up until 1954 in the Model 39-A's. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The Ballard barrels have 6 lands and grooves. The "T" letter prefix identifies your rifle as being made in early 1960. Marlin used a letter (s) prefix on the 39A from 1940-1968 to denote the year of manufacture. It is unknown as of December 2013 how Marlin ("Remlin") will continue with their serial numbering convention. HEY GUYS--I was in a pawn shop today & saw an old 39A .22 rifle on the rack. The serial number was 1221. There was not a letter prefix in front of the 1221. The model 57, might have a 2 letter code on the barrel, if so you can go to the part on the serial number sheets, that says Non 39A's 22's. This will only work if it it was made between 1962 and early 1968. Otherwise there were no serial numbers on non 39A's 22's, from 1935- 1968.It did say Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, Conn in italics on the barrel and it does say MARLIN GOLDEN 39A in caps. I know "golden" means its not old old. The 39-A's up to 1964 had a single letter prefix to the serial number, and up to 1968, had a two letter prefix to the serial number.
