As far as a fuel gauge, there is no simple way to put one on a Shadow because of the design of the fuel tank. You can replace the petcock with a Pingel petcock.

(for me anyway) I would guess that you could pretty safely run 30 miles after hitting reserve in whichever season. You can get a lot of working room by removing the seat and then removing the bolt at the back of the fuel tank. Once that bolt is removed, the rear of the fuel tank can be raised up and a 6 inch length of 2x4 can be placed under that bolt flange. This will allow greater access to the fuel line at both the petcock and carburetor.
