1. Re: Pan am pier to Old San Juan. It's a very long walk. Part of it takes you near the congested causeways into Puerto de Tierra (OSJ is actually on a separate island). It is a little harrowing there as the traffic coming from all directions is crazy. It really is not pedestrican friendly.

One day is certainly not enough and I advise 2 to 3 days to experience the city, visiting it both, day and night. We didn't, and I wouldn't advise you to lodge in old San Juan. Choose Condado or preferably Isla Verde. Both neighborhoods have terrific beaches while old San Juan does not, and they're only a 10-15 min, 10-15 $ Uber/Taxi drive.
