Isle of Palms is closer to downtown Charleston, as is Folly Beach, but neither of them compares to Kiawah as far as natural beauty. The problem is--it's very expensive.

Their parking lot is a favorite for locals, it's a better place than most shopping centers for leaving a car for hours. You can't walk anywhere from there but that's also true of most of the motels in Mt Pleasant.
